Imagine breaking land speed records of 200, 300, 400, even 600 mph on a piece of Ice Age history. It has been known, this desolate land is so flat you can practically see the curvature of our plant. This famous destination is visited by thousands of high-speed racers every year anxiously awaiting their turn to chase the horizon. International attention to Bonneville brings commercial filmmakers, photographers and writers. Bonneville’s 61st “World of Speed” event challenged 400 race cars and 150 motorcycles. There are a variety of competitors from oval track racers, diesel trucks, streamliners, model A Fords, motorcycles, and even jet turbines. Bonneville records are set by two runs. You must beat the existing speed which is the “Qualifying Run” which then qualifies participants for the “Record Run”.
Over 12,000 years ago, ancient Lake Bonneville was the size of Lake Michigan covering over 30,000 acres before the waters receded. The salt flats comprise of nearly 90% salt, with layers of that almost five inches in depth.
